I Am Still a Homeschooler

No, I didn't take my kids back out of school. But something I am learning this year is that homeschooling is not just something you do, it's a way of life. Even though my kids are at school for most of each day, I am teaching them so much at home, without textbooks.

The other day, my kids came home and told me they have holes in their eyes. There was a special teaching because of the eye screening, and the doctor "dumbed" down the lesson and was describing the black things at the center of the eyes as holes into the brain. No further explanation.

So we had a half hour discussion over dinner about the parts of the eye, and we looked up eyes on the internet, and we learned what the parts are called and what they do. Then, my kids went back to school, and taught their classes :)  The teachers were pleased, and so was I that the teachers let them do that. It wasn't my idea, it was my kids'.

Another day, the kids found frogs in the driveway. They must have gotten "lost" between the pond and the flooding on the road. We took a long time watching how their legs worked, how they were able to hop so far, and then we came inside and got out our science book and learned about frog muscles and how they are the same as ours.

Very often, on the road to somewhere (usually church) there is roadwork. My boys have become very interested in road equipment, and are learning that the internet is a source of information. They ask me how to look up what that big digger machine was and can we see one on the 'net?

You, too can be a homeschooler, if you aren't already. Whether your kids are in school or not, too young or too old, you are probably teaching them every day. When you read a book, do you just read, or do you use voices, tone inflection, and ask questions about what will happen next? When you help them with homework, do you tell them the answer, or help them figure out how to get the answer?

I love being a homeschooler, even though I miss my kids terribly.
God Bless,
One Christian Mom

I agree... sometimes the most important teachers are us their parents. By taking the time to teach them in those moments can have more of an impact than all the day in school.
